Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an information processing model, which is used to help people to move past previous trauma or to resolve significant fears of the future which might be holding them back. EMDR can be delivered as a stand alone therapy, or (more frequently) in the context of another therapy such as CBT.
EMDR therapists will work with traumatic memories and/or significant future oriented fears by asking the individual to bring the events/experiences to mind and then using a series of eye movements, or tasks, which enable the brain to process the information very quickly. This supports effective resolution of difficult emotion laden memories or fears and people frequently experience a relief of symptoms such as anxiety, stress, tension, flashbacks, low mood and nightmares. EMDR therapy sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, and individuals may experience significant relief from symptoms in one session, or it may take several. The difference between EMDR therapy and many other forms of psychological therapy, is the fact that it does not rely on people to talk in detail about the events that happened to them or they are fearful of, or to explore these events in any way.
EMDR has a very strong evidence base for a range of trauma presentations, including PTSD and Complex PTSD, as well as other emotional issues (which are often rooted in trauma) such as anxiety, depression, OCD, anger and psychosis. In addition, EMDR has been shown to help people to overcome additions and chronic pain.
